Moving to Costa Rica with children: international schools in Guanacaste

For families, the school often decides the location, not the beach. Guanacaste has established international and bilingual schools with Costa Rican MEP accreditation, one of them also US-accredited. What matters is the commute, the calendar, the language of instruction and the final diploma.
Why the school decides the location
A family moving to Costa Rica is not only choosing a house. It is choosing a daily rhythm: the school run, the children's friends, afternoon activities. International schools cluster around established communities on the Guanacaste coast, so it makes sense to search for the school and the property together.
The good news is that the northwest offers an unusually strong choice by Central American standards. Children can study in English or bilingually and spend afternoons at the beach, on horseback or on the football pitch.
Verified schools at a glance
The schools below were checked against their own materials. Capacity, fees and admissions change every year, so always confirm them directly with the school.
| School | Where | Accreditation and programme | Grades |
|---|---|---|---|
| Costa Rica International Academy (CRIA) | Brasilito, Flamingo and Conchal area | MSA (USA) and MEP, US curriculum, AP courses, SAT test centre | PreK to grade 12, 425 students |
| La Paz Community School | Flamingo area, two campuses | Bilingual, MEP accredited, focus on sustainability | Preschool to grade 12, about 750 students |
| Lakeside International School | Sardinal, near Playas del Coco | Bilingual, MEP accredited | PreK to grade 12 |
What to ask when choosing
Each school has a different character. CRIA leads to a US diploma, La Paz builds on bilingualism and the local community, Lakeside offers bilingual education close to Playas del Coco.
- School calendar: the Costa Rican year runs roughly February to November, the US year August to June.
- Type of final diploma and its recognition by European universities.
- Language of instruction and support for children who speak neither English nor Spanish.
- Class capacity and waiting lists.
- Transport: school bus or a daily drive.
- Tuition, enrolment and development fees.
How this relates to the property
In Guanacaste the school commute matters more than distance to the beach. Roads are busy at school times and journeys take longer in the rainy season. Before buying, drive the home to school route at the time children actually travel.
Families also create steady year-round rental demand near schools. For an investor this can mean less seasonal occupancy, but the figures must be checked with a local management company.
